Creating a Mac Netboot environment and image

I am hoping to get as much info on this as possible. Also I wanted to ask if we have a Mac server then would it be easier to image our Macs from that instead of Kace?

Thanks

  • ust spoke to the Kace Management and Developer Team. They do not fully support netbooting across subnets using iphelper. They also do NOT have it in the que for a future feature release. They believe that using an RSA on every vlan is adequate. The only way they will consider this important is based on votes. I found out we have to vote on things like this. I can't believe they consider booting outside of your imaging servers vlan as a "feature". Oh well, it's their rules, we just pay for them....

We have had to go back to the Apple server with some machines to image. The firmware gave us netboot across vlans problems.  We prefer the kace box, more user friendly.

  • oh man.....what if you don't have an Apple server, which we don't? - jimmyjay 12 years ago
  • I read on the web it should still netboot if you are on the same subnet as the kbox(iiphelper also may take care of it). My kbox is in the server room on a special server subnet so I cannot verify that for you. I also read about others that have back rev'd their firmware to get it to work. - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago

One of the other problems to watch for is Samba issues

Thanks for the feed back. I think I'm going to try the kbox just to keep our images held in one location, but I will keep my eye out for the netboot issue on the vlans. Is there any other problems I should look out for?

thanks
