Optiplex 760 has very strange slow behavior

I am testing our scripted installation on a demo Optiplex 760 unit, and I am finding that it takes a very long time for each step of the KBE initialization. Furthermore, once it gets to the point of actually installing windows, I find that each step takes a huge amount of time.

I restarted the process a couple times with the same results.

I let it run overnight and came in to find that it was %14 through the installation of windows.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? What could be causing this issue? I mean, it took half an hour for the computer to run through the "Big 3" Diskpart scripts... that normally takes 5-10 seconds.

I ran the hardware diagnostics and it came back clean.

It seemed to able to boot up to the factory version of XP fine.

The K2 has no problem issuing scripted installations to other machines.

MUEBEL Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed on your 760. I had several 760s that were very slow to load the KBE and the BIOS update fixed it.

  • Yup, we saw this on most 760s as well. The most-recent BIOS revision fixed it. - tshupp 12 years ago

I know when we got our 790's we had to upgrade the bios cause they had a lot of issues. Be sure if you have any current 700-900 models that you upgrade the bios. We had a hand full that we missed and the power supplies fried within 2 months of use.

The above recommendations should solve your issue as mentioned however another thing to try out for newer machines that might have this type of problem is download the specific nic driver for that model add to the KBE dir for that KBE arch type recache and rebuild. Sometimes a nic can function with a specific driver however you might be getting limited speeds ie 10mb.

My first thought would be a bad hard drive.
Does it take any other scripted install?
Will the scripted install for the 760 run on any other machine?
