Can you change the primary key for asset types in the K1000?
Hi all,
I'm seeing that when I create an asset type it is automatically creating the "primary" asset field of "Name." I'm assuming "Name" is a predefined primary key when you create asset types. However, in my environment, when I create asset types for desktops, laptops, printers, etc., I want to be able to use "Service Tag" as the primary key, not "Name." From what I have seen, I can define primary keys for CSV's I upload into KACE, but it seems counterintuitive to do that, particularly when "Service Tag" is something that is captured by default by the KBOX service for desktops and laptops. Any ideas here? Also, we have not upgraded to 5.4 yet, but it is something currently being considered. I did not see anything specific about the ability to define primary keys when creating asset types associated with 5.4 in the release notes, but maybe someone else has some information on this that I simply could not find. Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided, as a resolution to this will be quite important for a large project I am working on. Thanks everyone!

You can't change the primary key but you can store the serial number in the Name field, that's what we do in our environment. The Inventory then matches serial number with asset name to match systems. It's unfortunate that you can't at least rename the label of the field, but we have gotten used to it.

Hey Chuck - Thanks for your response. I understand what you are saying, but that's a real shame to have to be stuck with a field like "Name," and placing your primary key information in it. Looks like in my case, I'll be placing the service tag in the "Name" asset field. Anyone else have some additional input they would like to share regarding their experiences? - Prodimysterio 11 years ago
Any other comments or experiences from others? I would appreciate any feedback that can be provided as I continue to work through this. Thanks!

We do the same thing. The BIOS is in our Name field. You could vote on it and see if KACE will let users make the change.
