Migrating 1000 plus devcies to windows 10 using Dell kace k1000 (Method 1)( Run from network share )

Requirement: One of our customers has more than 1000 devices(70% are laptops and 30% Desktops). They want to migrate their windows7/8.1 to windows 10.
Prerequisites:
  • Fix Hard Disk and OS Errors if any
  • Disconnect non-essential devices (printer, scanner, etc.) attached to your computer
  • Make sure you install the latest updates for your current version of Windows 7/8.1 OS
  • Free Hard disk space required in C Drive: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS.
  • Your current version of Windows 7/8.1 should be a licensed OS

Note:Don't disable windows firewall in your  windows 7/8.1 OS.If you are in a domain and you are getting your IP address from DHCP server, if you disable windows firewall,You night face the following issues after upgrading to windows 10:

1)You might not able to activate your windows firewall (Public,Private and Domain Profile)

2)You will not get a IP address from your DHCP server because of the above issue.

My suggestion is that you enable the  Windows firewall in your windows 7/8.1 in your domain environment

For the Script:

If you have a space between words in your file share location. Then  use "

Example :

If your file share location is like this: \\filesrv.test.local \win10 upgrade\

Then script will be :

"\\filesrv.test.local \win10 upgrade\setup.exe" /auto upgrade /installfrom "\\filesrv.test.local \win10 upgrade\sources\install.wim" /dynamicupdate disable

Script should be run with local system Privileges in dell kace k1000 scripting and user logged in the target windows 7/8.1 operating system is a standard domain user.I was able to upgrade one windows 7 test laptop and one test desktop to windows 10

The windows 7 laptop has minimal applications installed and it took less than 30 minutes to upgrade windows 10 over LAN

The windows 7 Desktop has lots of applications installed and it took nearly1 hour to upgrade to windows 10 over LAN.

I will keep this blog updated till i complete the deployment process.I will also be testing the Method 2 (Copy to/run from client )
