System administrators, software packagers and setup developers use Installer Design Studio to reduce the cost of application ownership and software distribution by simplifying the creation, modification and deployment of Windows Installer (MSI) applications, which are executed to install software on end-user machines.

Installer Design Studio plays a key role in the deployment of desktop software before first use and as part of everyday desktop maintenance. Installer Design Studio covers three major areas of application packaging functionality:

• The first is application packaging – the creation of Windows installer (MSI) files to automate the installation of files and folders, registry settings and other application components. This is most useful for deployment of legacy and in-house applications that would otherwise be installed in a haphazard way, and with no easy method to uninstall or update them.

• Second is package editing, allowing an administrator to make changes to existing MSIs to correct problems and conflicts with application installers.

• Finally, Installer Design Studio can generate Microsoft Transform (MST) files for existing MSI installers. MST files contain automated answers to questions that would normally “pop-up” on the user’s machine during an install, allowing installations to take place unmonitored. With Installer Design Studio, administrators no longer need to worry about complex software installations that require user interaction or extensive administrator intervention and scripting. Instead, they generate an automated, unattended installation process. They can tailor the installers of commercial software to their own requirements, and they can more easily deploy in-house or legacy applications.
