The New WinINSTALL Version 8.6 and Desktop Availability Suite Releases Defined By Early Success with Key Customer Wins Adds Many Usability Enhancements for Easier Deployment and Implementation
Automated Multi-Threaded PC Refresh and Operating System Migration for Companies of all Sizes Now Easier than Ever Before
Bonita Springs, Florida—December 16, 2004— OnDemand Software, a pioneer of desktop lifecycle management solutions that help reduce the total cost of owning IT resources, today announced the new WinINSTALL and Desktop Availability Suite (DAS) versions 8.6. These releases along with a new release of the heavily used WinINSTALL MSI Packager Professional Edition are a direct result of work done over the past few months with several key new customers.
OnDemand’s new Desktop Availability Suite has experienced great early success at completely automating what has been a manual process for PC refresh and operating system migration projects. “We’ve seen a single-threaded process that includes many manual steps for companies that have to refresh PC hardware for users or have an operating system migration project underway,” says Jack Palmer, OnDemand President & CEO. “Our new DAS suite finally provides companies with a single product that can handle the many aspects of PC refresh and O/S migration. We have eliminated cost, eliminated the multiple tool approach and provided a multi-threaded approach that provides the ability to automatically migrate many machines simultaneously,” Palmer adds.
OnDemand has taken requirements directly from the customers and added them to this release making database installation and configuration automatic, agent deployment more flexible and easier, lowering the footprint of the agent and easing the complexity of operating system installation and remote client reset.
“We have removed the intimidation of database installation and configuration options and decisions that should lead to more evaluations and faster implementations of our product line,” says Mel Raff, Senior Vice President of Product Operations. He adds, “Seeing first hand what our customers were experiencing allowed us to directly address ways to make our products easier to use which directly affects customer success with desktop management.”
Since the introduction of the Desktop Availability Suite OnDemand has been involved with several large projects that involved complicated PC refresh and operating system migration situations that needed accurate asset management, MSI packaging, and software distribution along with personality transfer and local data backup and restore features. “We’ve won major deals over every competitor in the market today,” says Palmer.
New features in WinINSTALL and Desktop Availability Suite Version 8.6 include:
Setup Enhancements
* Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) automatically installed for evaluation and smaller installation purposes
* Smaller agent footprint which now only requires MDAC to be installed on servers which greatly limits the need for system reboots
New Virtual Boot Floppy for Remote Client Reset
* Client Reset now includes the ability to create a virtual boot floppy package which does not require a hidden reset partition or physical floppy and allows an easy to use software distribution process to distribute the virtual floppy.
Other improvements for Client Reset include increased saving in DOS memory, reset login improvements and reset package install improvements. When looking at all the improvements to the Client Reset process it becomes more straightforward and easy to use making migration projects much easier.
Agent Deployment Enhancements
* New and improved status messages for the machine list and agent deployment have been provided
* A new Add Machines Wizard improves the process for adding machines to the database including the ease of machine selection, specification of settings and the deployment of agents
* A command line option for deploying agents is still provided
Bandwidth throttling has been introduced for replication which allows throttling for each job as well as the ability to specify the maximum number of KB/second to use for the replication job. Other new features include enhancements to the scheduling engine to allow the new concept of global schedule jobs. This allows jobs to be scheduled to all machines in the database. Support for specifying a range of ports for the replication agent has been added as well as MSI summary information enhancements for MSI packaging that is available in the WinINSTALL MSI Packager Professional Edition as well as the full WinINSTALL and DAS Suite releases.
