1601 error

Hi I'm new here. I recently got a virus on my pc and removed most of it but it seems to have corrupted the window installer. I have tried serval of the methods posted in the forum to no success. Is there anyway other than a restore/format to fix the window installer?

Could you tell us what you have tried to restore Windows Installer?

My recommendation would be to re-install your entire computer as you can never be sure that it is all gone. Allthough, I like to add all kind of malware (including viruses & trojans) to a VM to investigate (Process Monitor and strace) and remove (Icesword) them just for fun [8D]

I have tried unregistering the windows installer and reregistering it with the commands msiexec /unregister and msiexec /regserver. I have also tried unregistering then renaming the .dll files i.e. msi.dll to msi.dll.bak., Msihnd.dll to Msihnd.dll.bak., and Msiexec.exe to Msiexec.exe.bak.

Did you make sure the Windows Installer (MSIServer) service is not set to disabled?

Have you tried to reinstall it?
Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en
Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en

You may need to flush the Windows Installer metadata using "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility": http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us

I did the run command misexec /regserver is there a way to make sure that enabled it? And I have tried reinstalling the windows installer using Windows Installer 3.1 Redistribution but everytime I try to install anything my pc crashes. As fas as flushing it no I have not tried that but I will and replay with what happens.

Sounds like your computer got very unstable after "removing" the virus.
If I were you I would reinstall the whole computer.

Ok I didn't do a reinstall. I was told of a program called Dial a Fix and fixes windows components without having to install anything and have now fixed the windows installer. Thank you for your help.
