clsid, progid and all that explained

i am struggling to come to terms with the whole clsid, progid, etc entries in the registry,
can anyone explain this to me or provide a link to an area that explains this?
what i cant get my head around is: if i was a c# developer how would i use these reg entries and what advantages are they to me?
