How does the Office Setup implement HKCU keys when using the Microsoft Office Customization Tool for Office 2010's Add Registry Entries section?

If you specify HKCU keys in the Microsoft Office Customization Tool for Office 2010, how does the Setup process (when using your new .MSP file to perform the installation) handle the creation of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys?

For example, Office 2010 installs on a machine with your MSP file.  If a new user logs into the machine and launches office, how is it generating the HKCU file?  Is this handled via ActiveSetup or Office repair or re-registering?

From what I have read it uses HKLM > HKCU Propagation, if there is no keyset for a user it then uses this key set HLKM\software\microsoft\office\14.0\user settings to create the users keyset with

  • Thanks again for the clarification SMal.tmcc. The reason why I am asking is I am planning an implementation to a Windows 2008 Server with Terminal Services. On our initial implementations using Altiris Deployment Console to push to the Servers, Office 2010 installs successfully (verified via log file) but one quirk we are running into is that Word will not launch. Consequently, Outlook launches but you cannot create a new E-Mail as Word is the default editor. The rest of the applications implemented in the deployment work fine: Excel, and Powerpoint.

I was wondering if the implementation of registry keys is affecting this. Have you had experience with this? - jbanq 12 years ago
  • We use citrix and have run into strange quirks like this and had to delete that users profile on all servers in the farm to fix it.
also her are a couple of links that talk about a problem with this working on TS

  • Thanks again for the quick response, Smal.tmcc. I modified the OCT and added the NoReReg key and Word appears to be launching without issue now. I'm just doing some testing to confirm all went well but I'm definitely farther because of your help. - jbanq 12 years ago

If you are using KMS for office check to see if the sessions are showing up as activated under word help. - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago
