Answer Summary:
The root cause of issue seems with the printers were having "Smart Installer" (Drivers are integrated on printer itself with in built memory which will not be removed physically. First start installation of printer drivers on Windows XP 32/Windows 7 32 OS installed system and connect USB cable when it prompts. After getting successful installation, You may run SIUtility64.exe or SIUtility.exe utility from CD without installing on XP Machine Disable "Smart Install" feature from printer by following below steps. For the basic driver for this model, extract it with 7zip to get it out of the self-extracting archive.

Tested in XP, the install parameter was this:

setup.exe \driveronly \silent

I think the full install package should be something similar.

You might also look into the HP universal driver: http://h20331.www2.hp.com/hpsub/cache/343033-0-0-225-121.html?jumpid=ex_r2845_go/upd

  • Thanks a bunch! I will take a look into that link. Very interesting. - dj_xest 12 years ago
  • I got it sorted. problem now is there is a feature called Smart Install in the printer that makes it a USB mass storage instead of a printer when connected to the machine and it prevents the OS from detecting the printer to work with the driver. - dj_xest 12 years ago
  • That was a nightmare for us those smart pritners with the software built in are flakey. We had one computer we had to reimage because it would never see it as anything but a storage device. I found the best way to get these to work was put them on the network and print to them with ip printing. We shipped 3-4 back after the first couple were such a pain to use. - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago
  • I found something about the Smart Install built-in on the printer but is not yet confirmed on my specific printer m401 but looks like a hopeful. According to the forum, there is a Service option in the panel of the actual printer where you can disable the Smart Install. If this is the same with the printer that I am working on, it would really fix the problem.

  • Hopefully that works, the first models with this "smart" software you could not disable it, sounds like HP is getting smarter. - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago

If the machine is part of a Windows domain, use the domain print services.  This will allow you to push selected printers to users or machines by using groups for each printer and policies.
