Merge Modules or Isolated Components
What are the rules of thumb for deciding whether to use isolation techniques or merge modules on shared components. On applications that install many shared components (ado ,comctl,comdlg,vb6stkit,oleaut32,comcat) if you use app isolation on all these components you end up with lots of isoltes files in the applications directory.

There are differences of opinion here. I know some people lean towards the view that everything that is installed in a shared area should be an isolated component. Personally I only use isolated components when it has been determined that an application has a issue with a later version of a shared file.
We use merge modules for any file that is possible to be in multiple packages and is either referenced in the registry or in a shared folder.
