MSI Error 1320 when installing to substituted drive

Has anyone found a way around this?

What happens is when I try to install a MSI to a drive that has had it's drive letter substituted using the subst command the MSI fails with the following error:

Error 1320: The specified path is too long. E:\ACAD 2002

The only fix I found is a horrid workaround. Share out the drive you want to substitute and map it as a network drive.
