Software Deployment

I work in a large scale environment (10,000+ machines) and am finding that after each machine is built (using the standard COE image), connected to the network and the SMS client (SMSMan.exe) is installed - that SMS does not 'recognise' the machine nor pull any applications that are advertised for a considerable amount of time. This period of time varies from 1-6 hours and this causes clients some serious delays...

What actually happens after you install the SMS client? Is there any way of speeding this process of client recognition and deployment?
