XP and scanner connection for non-administrators

I'm trying to distribute changes to a number of machines that will allow a [Canon] scanner to be plugged in as required when none of the users have admin or power user rights. I have distributed the drivers but it still wants administrator credentials when the scanner is first connected. After that initial connection it can be disconnected and reconnected as another user (all using mandatory profiles) with no further prompting, so presumably something is being stored that allows it.
Does anyone have any pointers as to what that 'something' is? I'd rather not have to trail around the computer rooms plugging the scanner into each machine every time they are re-imaged, but obviously can't set the students to be administrators or power users!
