"When you install Illustrator, it stores your Illustrator serial number in the Adobe Registration Database file. This file contains registration information for each Adobe application on your system. When you start Illustrator, it accesses the Adobe Registration Database file to determine whether your serial number is valid. If the Adobe Registration Database file contains an invalid Illustrator serial number, Illustrator returns the error, "Adobe Illustrator cannot run." Invalid serial numbers include those for expired beta versions, those that contain spaces, and those stored in a corrupt Adobe Registration Database file."
It actually appears that this information is simply stored within HKCU (the installing user's profile) but this is poses a hurdle to overcome in order to remotely deploy it.
If you're repackaging with a capture, do not include the preferences files in the package. If they are left out, the program will automatically generate them for the user the first time it's run; if they're left in, Windows Installer will try to self-heal them with the original (empty) values!
These preferences files can be found under the user profiles Application Data\Adobe folder.
You can use the native InstallShield functions to record answerfiles for setup and removal of the product.
Setup:
To record the answer file run setup.exe /r and install the product, upon completion you will find a setup.iss in %WinDir%
You can then install the app silently using:
setup.exe /s /f1"path\to\setup.iss"
Removal:
Run "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{412033BC-44CF-48D9-B813-4B835101F4D3}\setup.exe" /r to record an answer file for deletion.
Grab your new setup.iss from %WinDir%, you might want to rename it when sharing a directory with the answer file for installation. In my case, I renamed it delete.iss
