Note

Extract the MSI by executing the EXE file with the /A option. Specify the path to extract all the files. Open and edit the MSI to suit your liking for deployment. (Note: I've found that if you deploy it from the MSI using a group policy and attempt to launch it as a regular non-admin user, it crashes at start-up with a "Error 101" message. You have to run a repair install to fix that and it works fine from then on. Could be a bug during the beta release only, who knows)

This software is noted as being "beta", and it has some very frustrating behaviors to prove it. The biggest one is the "Error 101" message after installing it via Group Policy or from an Admin Install point, and then trying to run it.

Microsoft discusses this error here (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/releasenotes.mspx) and suggests running a repair after the installation. The problem is that the repair takes as long as the initial installation, and does not address issues for the non-admin user.

An alternate solution I tried was to run "C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe -Embedding". This resolves the error, but only for the logged in user. As soon as a non-admin user logs in, an "Error 103" occurs when they run Antispyware

Here is what I finally came up with as a solution:

1. Extract the .msi from the .exe from Microsoft, and create and administrative installation point

2. Edit the .msi to make it a "per machine" installation

3. Create a transform that adds a shortcut to "-->Start --> Programs --> Microsoft AntiSpyware --> Error 101 fix" The shortcut points to: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Antispyware\gcasDTserv.exe /regserver" This must be run once, and it must be run by a user with administrative rights. As far as I have had time to test, a "Run As" on this command will not work. There is a Custom Action that is native to the .msi that is supposed to do this. For whatever reason, it does not have the same effect. I even tried re-writing the CA to make this happen at install, but I was unsuccessful.

4. Include a Custom Action that opens write permissions selectively on "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Antispyware". Details are found in lockdown information below.

Another bit of information: Be aware that the upgrade codes for versions 1.0.5x through 1.0.615 are the same. This can cause problems in a number of areas depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

Again, keep in mind that the software is considered "beta", although it is one of the better free products. I have even read in newsgroups comments from Microsoft MVP's that the product is currently only intended to be installed machine by machine (in other words, not through Group Policy or admin install point), and only for users who have admin rights.

FOR SILENT INSTALL:
1. Login as Administrator
2. Run - MicrosoftAntiSpywareInstall.exe /S /v/qn /f2"c:\temp\msas_inst.log"
3. Run - %ProgramFile%\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasdtserv.exe /regserver
4. Run - %ProgramFile%\Microsoft AntiSpyware\GiantAntiSpywareUpdater.exe
5. Run - %ProgramFile%\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasdtserv.exe -embedding
6. Open Windows Explorer - go to "%ProgramFile%\Microsoft AntiSpyware", change the folder security setting for User group to Modify.

FOR SILENT UNINSTALL:
Login as Administrator
1. Run - msiexec /quiet /x {536F7C74-844B-4683-B0C5-EA39E19A6FE3} /f2"c:\temp\msas_uninst.log"
