Power BI Desktop Setup For Visual KACE Reports

Hello fellow Ninjas!

I came across a great tool to easily create visually appealing reports for our company. Having seen multiple threads on the limitations on KACE reporting I wanted to pass along this information in hopes that it may help someone.

  1. First, follow Dell's guide on installing an ODBC driver on your computer. I suggest the V5.2.X ODBC driver.
    https://support.software.dell.com/k1000-systems-management-appliance/kb/114992
  2. Second, download Power BI Desktop from Microsoft.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45331
  3. Open Power BI Desktop and when you're ready to link your K1000's database follow these steps.
    1.  Get Data
    2.  Choose MySQL Database
Unless you have changed you Report User's credentials for you K1000, use the default credentials below
Server: 10.10.0.X (You K1000's IP address)
    Username: R1
    Password: box747
Database: ORG1 (Unless you have other ORGs configured)
  4. Done! Now you can create visually appealing reports!
Here is an example of a report I created for my manager and CIO. (rotated on purpose, otherwise it would be small.)

  • Dear MaxIntosh,
Thank you for sharing this. I am new to the Dell Kace community. I am responsible for a Service Desk migration to Dell Kace Service Desk. I plan on taking advantage of the many useful and practical resources this community has to offer. However, I have to say until I ran into this report solution I wasn't as enthusiastic as I am now to find out more about this Power BI Desktop. I am going to investigate it, learn it, play with it and see if I can get anything close to what you have demonstrated in this thread. Once I understand what I am talking about I would love the chance to find out more of how this works should I need some input from you. Your report is something I have been after for a long time but none of the tools of previous service desk systems have been able to allow me to create. Thank you for this input. I will get to work. - gvega 8 years ago
  • gvega,

Happy I could be of some help! If you ever have any questions post them and I would be happy to try and answer them! - MAXintosh 8 years ago
    • Morning. I've Power BI Gateway configured however I can't seem to attach to K100 as a datasource.

I've ODBC configured with MYSQL connector and it tests successfully.

It's the PowerBI Gateway bit that won't connect.
Worth mentioning it connects to other SQL instances successfully.

Here is a bit of the error:

      -2147467259
Underlying error message: MySQL: We were unable to find a database provider with invariant name 'MySql.Data.MySqlClient'

Any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can you share any more about what tables and fields you used to build the dashboard? - theatrebyte 7 years ago
  • I have tried setting this up to use and this is the error message I receive: Details: "An error happened while reading data from the provider: 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.'" - scarpent 7 years ago
  • This looks AMAZING! I got Power BI installed and I can connect to KACE, but I'm having some difficulties creating a layout similar to yours. Did you use existing queries from the ITNinja community or was yours custom, are you willing to share? - jlocklear 7 years ago
    • I am hoping to get an answer to your question as well. I've played around with now for a few days and I haven something super simple down. - jnolasco 7 years ago
      • Jnolasco do you have a moment to share your template? - emars75 6 years ago
      • @emars75 I won't necessarily share my template as not sure it's going to help you since it's going to ask you to connect to my data source. Have you successfully connected to your KACE system using the steps above provided by MAXintosh? - jnolasco 6 years ago
  • Able to share this as a template? - ICTS 7 years ago
  • gvega, do you have a KB for this template? - Aneurysn05 7 years ago
  • Is it possible to get this template or some additional tips on how you set this up in powerBI? Thanks! - nicholas.vardis 7 years ago
    • Yes, this is actually very easy once you know how to do it. It does take some time though. - jnolasco 6 years ago
  • If anyone is interested in learning how to do this, I can host a Skype meeting and people can join, perhaps sometime this month.. - jnolasco 6 years ago
    • I would be interested in joining a skype meeting - DELANO 6 years ago
      • Sounds good, I'll schedule in a date and share it on here, closer to the end of the month. - jnolasco 6 years ago
    • Did this ever happen? If not I would also be interested in joining. - rjsmith480 6 years ago
    • I would like to join a skype meeting to do this too! I just got my Power BI to work and would be interested to see steps and tips on how you created yours! Thanks! - CJFare 6 years ago
  • Any reason you can't create a PowerBI template? You can change the datasource to a parameter before you export it. - theatrebyte 6 years ago
    • True, I could do that, but I'd rather show people how to do it so that they can understand what is going on, and do it themselves. - jnolasco 6 years ago
  • I'd be interested in joining, too. - ondrar 6 years ago
  • I'd like to see your powerbi file, the report looks great. - craigburke 6 years ago
  • I am interested in joining the Skype event, as well. - fauveld 6 years ago
  • Any update on that tutorial schedule? - Brady Williams 6 years ago
  • Sure wish this was recorded. - barchetta 2 years ago
