Windows 7 update keeps failing or redeploying.

Ever do a windows update and have it fail then keep trying to reinstall over and over again with no success?  Before you go thru any major steps try deleting all files and directories in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download reboot and check for updates again.  9 out of 10 times this will fix that.

  • Just be aware that you'll need to stop the Automatic Updates service (XP) or Windows Update service (Win7) before you can delete this folder. I usually stop the service, delete the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder completely and then restart the service to recreate the folder.

  • I have never had to stop the services. I just delete the files and restart, it has never been a problem. I have had to restart twice on a couple occasions for everything to rebuild itself. - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago
