How do I defrag an old MacBook Air running El Capitan?
Hard drive is 500 GB and running OS X is 10.11.5. It's painfully slow. I tested the drive with disk utility and it says no issues. RAM capacity is 4 GB.
Still the MacBook Air performance sucks. I think defragging the MacBook but how should I do it?

I have seen poor performance with older spinning drives and OS 10.11 and higher. There isn't a lot that you can do about it, unfortunately. You can try repairing disk permissions, that might help. Otherwise the normal steps of reducing running processes is your best bet.

I thought the Mac book air uses a ssd?? So it doesn't require defraging - btw no sdd needs defraging because of the way they work.
Cold nuke and rebuild. If you think it's the ssd, do a read write speed test, Crystal disk mark or something for Mac and compare it with other reports online - if you think it's a dodgy ssd.
