need script to populate "computer description" on macs

We recently went to setting the department under "computer description" on the Windows machines to reflect the department they are in for hw/sw inventory, this is going very well.  The macs show up with "empty" in the description field, does anyone have a script I can run on the macs to set this field?

I posted there too with a suggested location that we can put the Description data on our Macs that would be easy to edit and the Agent should be able to grab super easily.

I've never been able to find a way to make this work for Macs or Linux.

  • Thanks for the info, I read that in older version of OS you could add a line to the preferences.plist but nothing about newer versions. - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago

I've done some research on this and talked with some other KACE engineers, and we do not pull any information to populate this field.

It will always pull blank information. I think it should pull information though.

Please use our uservoice to have this ability added.

Here is a suggestion that is pretty close:

According to this you need to modify the smb.conf file on the computers:

http://macosx.com/forums/unix-x11/26521-configure-samba-computer-description.html

I checked on my system (Mac OS 10.7.5) and that file didn't exist so I'm not sure if that still works.

  • thanks will test that on mine, it is 10.7.5 currently - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago
  • tried creating that file, it did nothing. - SMal.tmcc 12 years ago
  • Taking a closer look that file might just apply to SAMBA server when configured on a MacOS machine. - chucksteel 12 years ago
