No. Microsoft warns to never edit PROTOCOL.INI manually in Windows. Actual settings are stored in the Registry, and changes in PROTOCOL.INI will be overwritten automatically. Instead, always use the Network applet in the Control Panel, and any vendor provided software that came with your network card to configure network settings.
