Download Current Uninstaller

Very useful as it will make sure the the machine is pristine before new install.

Create no update file
Create the following file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg

add the following line
AutoUpdateDisable=1

This will disable updates. Download and read Flash Player Admin guide for more info.

Deployment
If you have SCCM & WDS investigate SCUP seriously worthwhile!

If not Deploy the install with the uninstaller as a pre requisite. If IE is open at time of install the installer should wait until IE closes but in tests this hasn't always happens and causes an error. If your deployment tools allows you either kill IE before install or set to only run when logged out. This only needs to be the case for the uninstaller as when the installer then runs the chance of failure due to file locking will be gone.

There is a know conflict with realplayer where the plugin crashes if you have a video playing when you close IE. The realplayer download plugin can be disabled by doing the following.

How to uninstall/disable Real Player download plugin for IE

1) Search HKLM\Software\classes\clsid for RealPlayer Download and Record Plugin for Internet Explorer

2)Take a not of the ID

3) Go into IE and Disable the plugin. This will do it on a per user basis

4) Go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EXT\Settings

5) Export the Key with the same name as the CLSID and change the path to HKLM

6) This will create the a Key that disables the plugin for all users the choice is yours how you deploy it GPO/MSI/Reg.

Note

A few notable changes have been made to the background updater. You can now point the updater service to an internal server (rather than Adobe's). Also if you select the option to disable auto updates the service or task should no longer be created (previous versions created the scheduled task regardless). The only issue is that this is only true if you install Flash via the GUI and there currently isnt an option to do this when you want to silently install. http://blogs.adobe.com/spohl/2012/05/04/changes-to-adobe-flash-player-background-updater/

UPDATE: I actually just discovered that this can be done with the .exe installer by using the command line argument "-install -au 2". I found this info from a comment by Stephen Pohl here: http://www.gregorystrike.com/2012/05/15/the-adobe-flash-player-update-service-starts-up-every-hour/

Note

From 11.2. on there's a new feature: The "Silent Auto Updater" (!) which installs flash updates without user interaction. A scheduled task and a service are being created during Flash Player installation. In order to disable the silent updater add an entry SilentAutoUpdateEnable=0 to the mms.cfg file. If you like to completely get rid of it, run: 1. SC delete AdobeFlashPlayerUpdateSvc 2. SCHTASKS /delete /TN "Adobe Flash Player Updater" /F

One thing to note is that this has been changed in the latest version - The task should no longer be created if you have chosen to disable updates.

Note

When I deploy Adobe flash, I go to the following link below and download the plugin based and the other version for all other browsers. I created a batch file to take both MSI's and install them silently. I noticed Adobe does not tend to change the name of the install file so when there is an update, you just replace the files and run the batch file again. We are using this setup to deploy district wide in our school district and it has been working great.. http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

Note

11.5.502.110 was recently released. Following the steps listed above the update and fresh install of 11.5.502.110 was easy! Great tips on the mms.cfg. It was always a struggle in the past to disable Flash updates.

Note

I've been fighting Error 1722 for days. Installing the MSI without any switches, it asks for the location of "install_flash_player_10_active_x.msi" to uninstall the previous version but the path it offers is to the SCCM Cache folder "C:\Windows\SYSWOW64\CCM\Cache\..." and on some systems this folder has been automatically purged. My solution was to find the registry key holding the reference to the bad location and delete the entire hive.

Doing this, the MSI has no idea there is an older version to uninstall and successfully installs. I've checked the previous package and the Windows installer information is there. I'm at a bit of a loss why it didn't copy the files from the SCCM cache to C:\Windows\Installers\... to a non-volitile folder.
