From the ArcGis Install Team, "A silent or unattended installation is not possible with our current install....A silent or MST install will not be supported with ArcGIS 8.1. There is additional (and extensive) install logic outside of the MSI that is imperative for a successful installation."

Security
Lockdown installation in an Active Directory environment can be effected via GPO delivery. However the installation is effected in multiple parts, as the installation runs best from a local source. The final installation is effected via the vendors Installation run from a local cache via an "Async No Waite" CA launched by the final delivery msi. Care should be taken to preprovide the system with the correct Reg Quota size as well as the Page file size. Additionally the install developer should insure the the video drivers are current inorder to support the needs of the program.

We successfully customized the MSI delivered with ArcGis 8.3SP3 for a GPO deployment.

The trick is: in the Property table, set:

InstallMode=Complete
INSTALLLEVEL=1000
INSTALLDIR=whatever you want
ReturnValue=1
SOFTWARE_CLASS=Viewer
ESRI_INSTALLFOLDER=put the same thing as in INSTALLDIR
