Note
If anyone's interested, I can mail a working WSI to you. It performs a reboot at the end, purely because we found that on our build, although everything worked, things like the log-in dialog box for Navigator took F O R E V E R to load unless we rebooted.

Note also IBM's insistence on using a custom EXE (CWBSREG.EXE) for registering its DLLs (the majority have no DLLRegisterServer entry point).

Lastly, watch out for the registry fix-ups which the vendor install applies: it changes some Prog IDs from those inside the DLL in question. For example, the ProgID in cwbunshf.dll is "IBM.AS400.Network" but the fix-up changes the registry entry to "IBM.AS400.Network.3.7.1". How on earth it all works, God only knows...) I've added a script to the WSI to perform these "fixes", which you're also welcome to.

If you stick strictly with the information which the DLL registration provides, parts of the product will crash in spectacular style.

  • Hi VBScab,
Sorry to open this old thread but I am in similar situation. I am performing app-v of IBM iseries access v 5.4, the rest of the app works fine but the app crashes when I click on some of the functionality.

Please suggest. - karshi 9 years ago

Note
Just got this working after days of hair-pulling and swearing!

1. Download the Technology Preview from IBM here

2. Once you've downloaded the file (iSeriesAccessWI.exe), use WinRar or similar to extract the files within the exe to a folder.

3. Within the extracted files, run setup.exe. Before clicking on anything, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp and copy the .msi file that has just been created into the same folder as you extracted the files from iSeriesAccessWI.exe into. Rename if you so desire.

4. Using InstallShield Tuner or similar, create a response transform for your setup and configure anything else in the mst after that.

5. Deploy using AD or your distribution method of choice.

Note

The problem with Tech Preview currently (Sep 07) is that chunks of the product which are installed with the official installer (e.g. Navigator!) are missing from the MSI.

Command Line
This applies to the non-msi installation of IBM iSeries Access V5R4, but may work with other versions.

Command line that seems to silently uninstall:
"C:\Program Files\IBM\Client Access\cwbunins.exe" /s

Command lines to silently install:
setup.exe" -SMS -s -f1"\\your path\setup.iss" -f2""\\your path\file.log"
C:\Program Files\IBM\Client Access\cwbsreg.exe

After installation the PC will need to restart. Run cwbsreg.exe from the command line as above before the restart to avoid having to log on as an administrator (during install, setup collects a list of files needing registration, saving the list as cwbsreg.ini. cwbsreg.exe then registers these files and deletes cwbsreg.ini).
