Note
The installation process is now a two-step process:

1. Install Windows Installer
2. Install TechNet browser and new content

Because Installer manages system files and is treated as a system component, it must be installed by an administrator the first time TechNet is loaded. It is recommended that machines running NT 4.0 have at least Service Pack 4 loaded on both the client and server machine. During Setup, you may be prompted to reboot your machine if:

- Common controls need to be updated or loaded if they do not exist on the machine (Win9x machines and NT4)
- Windows Installer is not currently loaded on the machine

Microsoft states that if you need to reboot your machine during Setup, you will not need to reboot in subsequent months -- this is a one-time only occurrence. When subsequent issues are installed, Setup will automatically detect existing versions and be capable of a quick install.

NOTE: "Advertisement" of TechNet is not supported because the application updates monthly and would require a full reinstallation of the browser each time the content is updated.

When you are able to install, you will have three setup options:

-Minimal installs only the browser application. Table of contents files are not loaded onto the machine.

-Typical installs the browser and table of contents files onto the machine. This is the default setting and requires approximately 15 MB.

-Complete installs the browser, table of contents, and all content files onto the machine. This requires about 550 MB and is recommended for optimum performance.

Regardless of which installation option you choose, Installer will be loaded onto the machine so that it can load the browser and content (if content is selected).
