deployment for virtualized clients with different domains/licenses
Hi,
I am in the process of evaluating software deployment solutions for virtualized desktops (XP and Vista). I am using Vmware ESXi and VMware Virtual Desktop Manager.
I think SCCM and other high-priced software would be more like an overkill-solution, but I still have some requirements the software has to meet:
- the virtualized desktops are in different domains / different networks ..... (PROBLEM ?)
- there have to be different licensing possbilities for packaging (i.e. each Desktop has own license key for MS Office)
so what may be the best solution ... that's not so expensive ? any recommendations ?
thank you very much in advance!

If you are able to do this in-house (that is if you have highly skilled internal staff that are able to and enjoy homebrewn solutions) and do not require external support then you could try something like WPKG.
http://www.wpkg.org
WPKG is an open-source scripted solution that's easy to mold and customize to make fit in most any environment. I use it for situations like the one you describe, where SCCM or other high-end stuff feels like overkill and you aren't scared of doing some "real" work ;-)
If that feels just too much then maybe something like Specops Deploy, which I have only brief, but good, experience with, is worth looking at. I don't remember their prices or if they tie you to a single domain license-wise and the like, but try them out. They are a lot(!) cheaper than SCCM.
