This problem occurs when the MSI is set to remove any previous instances before installing an upgrade, and Windows Installer is unable to remove the previous instance. This is normally due to a corruption or loss of required entries/files on your system in order to uninstall the software. To prove this, go to Add/Remove programs and attempt to remove the software- the uninstall should again fail (but may provide more detail as to why).
If you cannot uninstall the software, use Microsoft's Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the previous version from your system.
Note: you may want to backup any data files (.dat, .xml, etc.) before doing so if you hope to retain settings or other such data between the older version and the new one being installed.

Hi,
Error 1714 usually occurs because of previous half installed or half uninstalled software. So I think you need to first completetly uninstall, clean the system and then try to reinstall. Here is the link for one such problem and it's solution - http://www.techyv.com/questions/older-version-symantec-antivirus-cannot-be-removed
Hope it helps..thanks - Joyce_meghan 11 years ago
