Mac patch "HT208742" forcing reboots without prompt

In our environment, patch "Apple 2018-001 Security Update for macOS 10.13.4 (HT208742)" has been observed in at least two cases to initiate an install and reboot without going through the standard patch reboot steps. Our reboot settings for the schedule are set to "Prompt User" and the timeout action is "Reboot Later" so this should not be forcing reboots. I am not sure it is isolated to this patch but this patch consistently causes the problem. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Unfortunately, Mac patching is very hard to test since you can't easily roll back OS updates. To test this I've been using a virtual machine in Parallels which I can restore to vanilla 10.13.4. But I have definitely seen the problem on an actual device. I contacted support and they said they can't duplicate the problem. I want to try to figure out if this problem is isolated to our server, so please let me know if you've seen anything similar with macOS patches.

By July 18, Security Update for macOS 10.13.4 had been replaced by macOS 10.13.6, which would contain all the fixes of Security 2018-001 which was written to address issues with the older 10.13.4 released in April, 2018:

We have the opposite issue here, where OS updates that should be restarting don't automatically, and appear to need a manual restart at some point to fully install.
