Mcafee 8.7i
Hi, I've got a client that's about replace Trend Micro 10 with Mcafee Antivirus 8.7i. Has anyone had any luck getting the bundled uninstall utility to work silently?
When running a manual install the Mcafee installer prompts whether or not to remove Trend, clicking yes removes Trend cleanly (nice job on Mcafee's part), however when I use Mcafee Installation Designer to customize the package and run the resulting setup Mcafee just installs alongside Trend. I've been through the MID and the Antivirus 8.7i release documentation and haven't had any luck being able to find what I'm missing.
Has anyone else here performed this kind of migration?

To answer your questions in reverse order (we're all about reverse order down here), the Mcafee Enterprise AV installer includes an ini containing search strings (registry/file ect) that it uses to identify various different competitor AV products and remove them prior to installation. When you run the installation manually it will actually prompt "Do you wish to remove product X before continuing?" This functionality in the installer would greatly simplify the deployment process. Unfortunately when we run the install silently it leaves Trend in place, I'm not sure if it's because the Installation Designer strips the functionality out or just has a Remove=FALSE somewhere. I couldn't find anything obvious in the property values, it looks like a function of the setup.exe wrapper.
There's a very obvious step I'm missing here, still waiting on feedback from Mcafee, I was wondering if anyone here had any particular experience with this product.
To answer your first question; The current production version Trend 10, yes - plan B is chain an uninstall for Trend 10 to the Mcafee install, the older version Trend 7.3 that was in the process of being phased out when the customer decided to switch to Mcafee (they like to keep us on our toes), no. According to the notes I have from the original packaging work they weren't able to get the uninstall for Trend 7.3 working, although the competitor product uninstall function of the Mcafee installer didn't seem to have a problem getting rid of it. Packagers that have been and gone since then did get the Trend 10 upgrade working however, so I know engineering a plan B for 7.3 is possible should that become necessary.
So basically, attempting to follow Vendor's advice, getting nowhere, seeing if this board has any better ideas. Failing that we'll just treat it like any other migration and run uninstalls/installs accordingly.
