Project(s) to boost an IT Department?

Good Evening,

I am trying to come up with ways to improve the IT department at an educational Institute.  Do the ITNinja community know any type of project(s) that will help the department/  Thank you for your help and cooperation.

You'll first have to be a bit more specific about the kinds of improvements you're looking for. Efficieny? Skill level? Supported Tech portfolio? Communication?

I could think of a couple more :)
