Question about porting Novell Zenwork packages over to MSI
I have a question about converting Novell legacy software packages (Zenworks) over to MSI. I have investigated via Google and found very limited info about this process. I was just reaching out to see anyone might have had any experience with this process and what might be the best way to go about it.
I have experience with Adminstudio 7.5/8.6 and know it has some conversion options for this process; I’m unsure how reliable this is?
I’ve worked with Wise package studio in the past and I know it also has some conversion utilities; I had attempted to convert legacy packages from WinINSTALL. The conversion process was far from great and I ended up just repackaging all of the applications with WPS.
I have far too many applications to start over, repacking a huge number of applications from the Zenworks format to MSI… I’m REALLY looking for a solid converter...
Thanks in advance for any help...

I only used the Legacy Setup Conversion utility from Wise Package Studio once with an old ZENworks (axt) package that we weren't able to repackage.
And the conversion worked fine. Ok, the msi wasn't looking that nice (since all those 1.fil, 2.fil, 3.fil files from ZEN were converted 1:1 to MSI components), however the package was installing fine.
So, I have not that much experience with it but it worked for me. Try it with few packages and decide for yourself...
Hope this helps.
Have a nice weekend.

I worked on a project that tried to use the Adminstudio converter for Zen packages and we didn't have any luck with it. Zen packages are very different than MSI and we weren't finding the resultant packages to be reliable enough to trust.
If you have a massive MSI packaging project on the horizon, you should look seriously at App-V. It will cut your packaging time in half.
