Recommendation For Corporate Software Menu To Install Products Is Needed
Can somene suggest a software product that would allow for me to maintain a list of software products stored on a file server which can also be displayed as a software menu for technicians to use while installing software on a user's PC? Here are some other requirements:
1) Ideally, I would like for the list of software to be in an Oracle database.
2) The software menu should require a user to log in and be authenticated to a domain.
3) Users should only see software that they are entitled to install
4) The system should allow for users to be added to custom groups of other users so that entitled software is shown to every one that is part of that group
5) User's should be allowed to be part of more than one group and thereby given display lists of software that they are entitled to for both groups
6) The software list should be stored on an Oracle database
7) The following actions should be recorded into the Oracle database when using the software menu:
a) when a user logs in
b) what a user installs along with the computer name, date, software title, etc.
8) We would like the menu to be used royalty free so no costs charged on the number of PCs it is used on. A single one time site license charge would be acceptable.
9) The software menu is needed to run on Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Vista
10) The software menu needs to be able to run without installing it onto a user's PC. A web based solution would be good or something that can run from a file server.
At the present time, we have a software menu tool like this that was developed internally in Delphi. We are considering rebuilding it in Visual Basic .NET. However, before we invest in all that development work, we would like to know if something is out there commericially that we can use. We have seen a few but they wanted to charge a cost for every PC the menu was run on which for some products added up to over $60,000. Our internal solution has no such cost because once it was built it did not need any further maintenance, it was simply used by many for several years on thousands of PCs.
Thanks in advance.
