Useful Tools 4 Package Development
Hi All,
Can you give me some useful tools that you use in software packaging? I use installshield for creating msi, VMWare for testing and Installrite to capture the changes. Is there any other useful tools specially in troubleshooting the msi? Thanks much!

PictureTaker
FileMon
RegMon
Orca
FielMon and RegMon were superceded a long while ago by ProcMon which combines the functionality of the older tools and improves them exponentially. For example, the exclusion lists of the former are restricted in length by the maximum number of characters allowed in a text box. I also prefer InstEdit over Orca but Orca is part of the Platform SDK which, if you're serious about software support, is another invaluable download.
'Beyond Compare' is another "must have" along with 'Dependecny Walker'.

Well, that might be true but if you're in a WinXP environment using antiquated hardware and Office 2003, your statement is true, it doesn't apply to everyone. I can't use Procmon therefore I'm stuck using the old stuff. I took this position because they told me they'de be upgrading to Win7. As it turns out, they will be upgrading to Win7 in 2013. YIKES! Talk about getting the most bang for your buck! I wonder how long Win7 will be on these machine.
