Once you become familiar with syntax, download some scripts and play with them. That is the best way to learn.
Ignore Paul's sarcastic entreaty to use Google with that search term (sarcasm is my job!) as there'll be too many hits. There are some nice scripts on http://www.computerperformance.com and http://cwashington.netreach.net amongst others. You should also download the tools scripts from http://www.jsware.net. The registry and INI class files will serve you well in the packaging environment.
There's a good VBScript reference on DevGuru http://www.devguru.com/technologies/vbscript/home.asp
Oh, almost forgot...Your post would probably have been better placed in the 'Scripting' forum.
