What is the criteria to DisplayVersion in MSI?

Normally I have my own criteria to DisplayVersion... What is yours? or Is there any standard to perform it?
I mean when Do I need to upgrade the first number, the second and so on... ? Example 1(first).00(second).000(third)...

I use the MS notation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Version_Number but there are different schools of thought, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning
