Application Patches

How long does it take for application patches to become available on the KBOX?
Is there any way to be notified when new patches are avaiable?

For example, I'm looking for the newest version of iTunes (10.5.2) and Java (1.6 Update 30). I don't see either one as being available and I think they've both been out for atleast 2 weeks.

Thanks.

Hi,

You will get notifications from the KBOX if you are listed under the Administrator email ( Settings > Control Panel > General Settings). Updates are pulled from a 3rd party vendor that you OEM though your KBOX service maintenance. Patches can take up to 48 hours to download as Patchlink tests these patches before releasing them. Our KBOX has Java 1_7_0 already downloaded. You might want to check your statue from the table at the bottom of the Security Module. Hopefully it has been able to reach out and download.

I tried manually updating before posting, and it was succesful, here's the patch status from the Security tab:

Total Patches 8591
Active Patches 1135
Inactive Patches 907
Disabled Patches 6549
Last Update Status Updated
Last Successful Update 2011/12/29 10:26:49
Last Update Attempt 2011/12/29 10:26:49

-----------------

I also have Java 1.7.0_01 listed, but that's not the latest version of 1.6 (should be 1.6.0_30).

I'm struggling to understand what, if any, communication there is between Dell and it's customers.

I just checked my patch inventory; the last update for version 6 was u29, which is labeled as being superceeded (and was set as inactive) by 7u1, both of which were released on 2011-10-18 and are labeled as critical.
The download page at java.com shows me 6u30 as the latest update. There is a "Looking for Java 7?" link that provides the following information:
Why is Java SE 7 not yet available on java.com?
The new release of Java is first made available to the developers to ensure no major problems are found before we make it available on the java.com website for end users to download the latest version. If you are interested in trying Java SE 7 it can be downloaded from Oracle.com

If you click through to the developer's download you end up with 7u2. So I'm not sure why 6u30 isn't available through Kace, but I'm not ready to do a deployment of 7 at the moment. I've toggled the status of the 6u29 and 7u1 patches on my kbox and a quick check of software inventory shows zero installations of 7.

Also Java 6 Update 30 doesn't provide any security patches. So going from update 29 to 30 technically isn't any more secure. I know that Lumension concentrates more on security patches. I'm not sure if the latest iTunes has any security enhancements.

The 48 hours referenced above is accurate for Microsoft OS critical patches, but non critical or non-MS patches might take longer. Please contact support if there's a particular patch that you need rushed. The following article has remained at the top of the news feed on your appliance for nearly a year:

The patch feed for the K1000 appliance provides Critical Security patches for operating systems and applications. To see all supported OS and applications please download and reference the following document: “Patching Support”.
Other non-security and non-critical updates for supported applications and operating systems may also be included in the patch-feed based upon customer request. Requests for additional updates are prioritized and scheduled for publication in the patch-feed on a weekly basis.
Please download and open the attached document to review the status of any open patch requests. If a specific non-critical patch is missing from the K1000 appliance and it is not on the attached list, please submit a new ticket to support@kace.com to request the missing patch. Download the report here.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
