Automatic Asset Managment of devices

Is there a way to change what the Kace Agent uses to setup Assets?

It appears that it is using the Device name and this may change over time if the device changes department or location..

We'd like it to use something that will never change like a Dell Service tag or Mac address for example...

This would allow the Kace system to automatically update any device that the name may change on with the new information rather than creating a new asset.

Navigate to Asset Management - > Asset Types - Devices
Look at the Mapped Inventory Field and Matching Asset Field.
More info is in the product Admin guide.

Thank you Kevin but this doesn't really answer my question.. How does Asset information get into the Asset list and can it be configured to automatically update the information if inventory info changes?

When we build systems out of the box we may not know who or where they are going to assigned to. We do this to try and stay ahead of the need for new systems to be built. When we build them we give them a generic asset number name City-12345 for example, but once they are assigned, that name will change to reflect location and building as well as the asset number. when they are first built, the show up in assets with the city-12345 name and when we rename them later they show up a second time with the new name. We want to have the system update the name and not duplicate the system in assets by having the asset tied to something like the system bios serial number or something else that will never change through out the life of the system.

As Kevin said... In Asset Management -> Asset Types -> Computers, you can adjust these two fields... Mapped Inventory Field and Matching Asset Field. This is why you're getting duplicate entries, you probably need to adjust these values. We actually turned this off because we were having similar issues back when it was much more limited options for mapping and we just never tried turning it back on. We prefer the Assets to be updated manually via one off user entry or CSV import. That way we don't have to worry about anything getting messed up by the automation. But take a look at this area and see what yours is set to, and adjust accordingly. If you're unsure what these mean, I would refer to the admin guide.

Sbaxter, so we have the same issue, you can’t set KACE to update the asset name once it is created.

To avoid duplicating assets the best way to tie inventory to assets is by the serial number, also turn off any auto archiving as that will create issues.

If You create the asset record with the temp name and the correct serial number as you build, you will still have to rename the asset in line with the device name once it is installed. There is no way around that.

If You are barcode scanning on installation then you rename the asset with the correct device name at that time, otherwise create a report or smart label to indicate when a device has checked in and the naming convention matches the temp style, then edit the asset manually.
