Barcode Scanners
Has anyone tried to use any sort of barcode scanner and application to import or manage assets? If so, what product and how involved was it with the KACE appliance?

We do this all the time. I have an Excel doc that I use to scan in the S/N of the device (let's say laptops) which is located on the outside of the box, as well as our asset tag that we affix to the laptop (6 digit numeric). Generally Make, model, HDD size, PO #, Vendor, etc.. is all the same so it's a simple copy and paste for the rest of the data I am tracking. I import all into the assets in Kbox and then when we set up the laptops we name them after our 6 digit asset tag which ties the inventory record directly to the asset record created during import as we use that as our primary key.
The scanner is a simple USB scanner (Opticon) connected to a laptop as we scan everything in at once. We do this at least once a summer with roughly 200 laptops. Saves me a bunch of time VS doing each manually once the client has been installed.
my 2 cents worth.

Guys,
I appreciate the original post is a little old, however as of June 2014 we are now shipping a Barkode scanner app for the IOS platform that will allow you to scan and update your existing computer assets data attributes in your K1000 (Department, Cost Centre Status and Location) and also scan and add new Computer Assets to your K1000.
Just go to www.KACEBarcode.com and fill in a contact form and we will be able to arrange a demo of the app.
