Can't access server by \\servername but I can \\IP

The server is in DNS both A and PTR, it is resolving from the client pc using ping servername. I cant access the server by typing \\servername but I can access it \\IP.

Under SAMBA I do have Enable File Sharing checked.

Any ideas?

  • Normally \\shortName only works on a local subnet. - Jbr32 11 years ago

Access the server with fully qualified domain name..

For Ex: \\Server.MyDomainName.com

If you're in a different domain, you'll have to either specify the FQDN or update the DNS config of your local NIC by adding the appropriate suffixes to the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" section of your DNA tab under 'Advanced TCP/IP settings'
