Fully automated client image - XP and 7
hi all,
Absolute beginner, never used KACE before.
Basically we have scripted deployments of XP and 7, but they are not as automated as I think it could be. For instance, once machine is imaged and built, helpdesk guys have to rename machine, join domain and run Windows Updates. Although environment is not massive, I believe we could achieve greater results by fully automating the imaging/build process.
I am wondering what is the best way of assiging a unique name for the machines, e.g., use wsname and scan/assign serial number from BIOS? How could I run a postinstallation task to install Windows Updates?
What I would like to achieve is: Install OS, then apply Windows updates, scan/assign unique machine name, join domain, install other software.
I am trying to find a guide/KACE documentation which shows a flowchart of the imaigng/build process + a more detailed explanation on how to configure/maintain a fully automated image.
Apologies if this has been asked before.
Help/suggestion are much appreciated.

Just in time I guess....This will be very useful, thanks for the prompt reply.
Are you adding a sticky with the presentation/code to the forum???
Encouraging to know....I suppose deployment/build must be fully automated...

I did a presentation on exactly this at the user Konference a few weeks ago. I will be posting the presentation along with the code I used for Windows 7 customization soon.

I won't go into detail, but what you want to do can definitely be done using post-installation tasks. There are a few other ways of accomplishing each item as well. You should look forward to seeing airwolf's presentation.
