intel® usb 3.0 extensible-host-controller driver crashes (Dell Precision 5820 + Windows 1903)

Hello everyone,

we are mentally running on empty.

In our company we are working with around 20 'Dell Precision 5820'.

At almost every Dell Precision 5820 the 'intel® usb 3.0 extensible-host-controller' driver crashes regularly, so the affected employees can't user their keyboard and mouse.

This is really annoying because they can't save unsaved projects and files.

The only possibility to solve the problem temporarily is to use TeamViewer, save the employee's project and restart the computer.

After that the computer runs normally for hours or days.

We already called the Dell Pro Support and Intel twice, but they blame each other.

The real problem is that the 'Dell Precision 5820' has no USB 2.0 port, so we can't save the problem hardware-based.

Does anyone you have the same problem or have any idea to solve it?

With regards

Fabian Sommer

  • Did you ever get this sorted out? Having the same issue on our 5820's, and I have tried the power settings below but that's not the issue. The Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft) driver seems to be randomly failing. - dsims 4 years ago

You may need to just change a setting when I think about how you say the time is whatever.

Turn off allow computer to save power option for the controller.  I had our techs to do that and also turn it off on the nics for weird problems we were having like this.

You can export the driver from other models you have (E7440, E7450, E7470, E7480, E7490, Precision 3600, Precision 3610, Precision 5810) and test it if it works.

Also, have you tried Windows 7 drivers on Intel site? I know it is not supported but you are not getting much support either way.

How about other vendors like Lenovo? They have devices with the same chips.

You might need to get an older driver. We have 4 of these running : with no reported issues.

  • Thx for your answer.

Yes, everything is up-to-date on all affected computer. The problem is that the 'intel® usb 3.0 extensible-host-controller' driver is not available as a standalone driver since 2019. It will automatically installed during the windows installtion or via windows update. We only have the problem with the Dell Precision 5820. The other models (E7440, E7450, E7470, E7480, E7490, Precision 3600, Precision 3610, Precision 5810) work without any complications. - Turps 5 years ago
