Migrating SMA To new a physical box?
Hello,
So, my org has had a new box sitting on a rack for the last few years. It's just been sitting on the initial setup screen. Our Kace admin recently left unexpectedly, and all of the work has been moved on to me. One of my first tasks is to setup and migrate this new box. So far the networking info for the new box has been added, but I had a few questions.
1. For the license key, am I using the same license key that's setup on my old box, or would a new one have come with the new box when it arrived? I should be able to get access to the old admin's emails if needed, but it's not something I have immediately on had. I can tell you that my current license is valid for a few more years still.
2. I was just going to follow the KB article 119863 on the Quest site. It makes it seem as though I just need to update the new box to match the old, backup my current databases, turn off the old box, and then upload the database to the new box. Is this correct, or am I totally wrong in this assumption? The article makes it seem as though all addressing info will flip to the info on the old appliance.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

You will use the same license. Get both boxes on the same version. Make an offboard full backup and restore that to new box and it keep the settings and data.

If I'm using the same license, will the old box have to come offline, before I start updating the new box? Or is there a period of time I can have both up to avoid any K1 downtime? - Cheecho 5 years ago

You are not allowed to use multiple boxes with the same license at the same time.
I suggest to setup the box with a test license (contact quest) until you can restore the backup.
Then bring the old box down and restore the backup. The backup contains the "old" license, so you don't need to do anything here in the first place. This will minimize the unavaiability.
But keep in mind, that all work (tickets for instance) are lost between the backup and the finished new appliance.
Also please check the hardware version of the "new" appliance, since G11 (R410 and R610 ) are EOL, which means, you cannot upgrade to newer versions with these appliances. - Nico_K 5 years ago-
Nico,
Thanks for the replies! So a test license would allow me to update to the same version, and be over written on upload.
Luckily, we dont make heavy use of the ticket system, but all we really need is our inventory, patches, and managed distros!
Thank you for the reminder to check the hardware. As I'm sure it's not the newest, but We're currently stuck on 8.0.320 I think, so hopefully enough to do something. - Cheecho 5 years ago
