USMT and K2
Has anybody successfully implemented a system to have the K2 use the USMT to capture and deploy user states? My testing has indicated that for it to work in Windows 7 you must turn UAC off. I am curious if anybody is using this feature, and if it does indeed necessitate turning UAC off, or is there some way to get around it.
A related question is: Where does the K2 keep the config files for the USMT Templates? I would like to generate a template and then use that to script out User State capture by some other methods.

Have you tried capturing the user state from KBE?

so it looks like offline user state capture involves some specific pre/post installation tasks. Is that what you are getting at, or is there some convenient way to run the user state capture from the recovery console in the KBE? - muebel 12 years ago

That is correct. IF you want to use them without erasing the machine, you can create a script install, capture and then reboot BEFORE the OS is deployed, - dchristian 12 years ago

If you want to create a new config file you can use the following tool:
It is availble at the following site: http://www.wintools.com.au/ and it is a 30 days trial!
This tools allows you to create the application and user xml, you will need then, via commandline, to create the config.xml file which you will be then able to upload into the K1000. Go to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd560755(v=ws.10).aspx to get more information.

I found a config.xml at \\K2000\USMT\bin\usmt4\x86. It matches the template I want to use. My intention is to use this config file to script out an online state capture mechanism.

I think these are the default, that come with the WAIK. Just curious what are you trying to do? Can you clarify other methods? - dchristian 12 years ago

just the custom configuration made available with the template in K2. That is, capture "my documents" but not "my pictures." I also don't want to capture many of the other available components. Just bookmarks and documents really. - muebel 12 years ago
