What are the options for a small remote site that could use a K2000 for imaging?

We have a remote site, about 2000 miles away where we have an SDP for our K1000. They only have about 200 machines and they use HP desktops while my site uses mostly Dell. They have 7 different hardware models to handle drivers for on images. I recently received excellent assistance from SMal.tmcc with setting up off-board images at my site and would like to do something similar at our remote location.

What options are there to get a K2000 (or some sort of K2000 appliance) out there?
I don't think we'll get approval for much of an investment on this. I'm mostly interested in no cost or low cost solutions, but I'm happy to hear of any potential options regardless of cost.

SMal.tmcc may ned to answer this next one. I could create an image$ share at the remote site and build a setup based on their servers and shares, but I'm not comfortable booting machines 2000 miles away to a Kace2000 here. Is that even possible?

Thanks!

  • Would a Remote Site Appliance work in this setting? You definitely wouldn't want to PXE to the K2000 with that distance, but the RSA could handle things. - nheyne 9 years ago

If you have a K2000, then you can download the K2000 RSA (remote site appliance) VM from support - you can have as many as you like.  We are using old desktops running Win7x64, with 8GB RAM, minimum 250GB HDD.  Install VMplayer Pro (required for business use - $99).  Install the RSA VM and then link to your K2000.  You control which images/KBEs are pushed to the RSA from the K2000.  All you need to do is change the DHCP scope at the remote site to point PXE to the RSA: Option 66 = IP of RSA, Option 67 Bootfile Name = k2000.0.  Cheap and easy.  Be sure you have console access to the remote desktop.

  • If you use a win 7 machine just remember the connection limit is 20 - SMal.tmcc 9 years ago

Set up a server at that site with the image share and also run a VM on it.

Create an RSA on the VM and sync your shell images over.  Create a custom KBE for that site that boots to the RSA and put map command in the kbe to map to that sites share. Set that sites scope for pxe booting to the RSA also. The software it is looking for drive letters not unc's

  • FYI if you do pxe boot it syncs the main K2's default over to the RSA, so do a remap as a mid level task to change mapping - SMal.tmcc 9 years ago
    • Awesome. I thought you might have something. We've got the VM structure out there ready to go. I'll check in when I get the wheels turning.
