I don't see my company going to windows 8 for laptops and workstations anytime soon. I could see us taking a look at it on tablet but not for the other user devices. -

Because of our license deals, where it doesn't matter if we run Windows 7 or Windows 8 (same price), we might upgrade, but defiantly not right away and only if it can be configured to work like Win 7 with the startmenu and off course with the metro ui turned off. The only thing which I find interesting about Windows 8, is that it's a bit faster and has better support for multi-core cpu's. -

Quite frankly, no it is not a misstep. Take some time and spin up a machine with it. Beyond the metro UI there are key items that are great both on the workstation and the server versions.
One killer item on the workstation is native Hyper-V support... if you run OS versions like Enterprise you automatically have 4 VM licenses for "free" and being able to spin up VHDs that can be managed with the same interface, regardless of the OS (server/workstation) is great. Also UI updates like a great copy detail dialog and improved task manager (see the inherited portions from Sysinternals Procmon and Procexp)...
On Server 8, performance, performance & performance is king... that and ReFS in place of NTFS.
Lastly, the metro UI is manageable with a mouse with a scroll wheel & now would probably be a good time to invest in Wacom type of devices since people adopting 8 would likely move away from the mouse sooner than later... -
