Is there a way you can customize your location of the computers in the K1000?

In the k1000 I am looking at the computers section.  It shows the compter name, description, ip, and last user.

Is there a way I can put a location in?  for example: Manufacturing A2?  When having to run out to the machine if others do not know where they are located this would be useful.

I am really new to IT.  This is my first job in the industry and I have been with the company a little over 1 year.  So any help I can get would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Raelynn

The "Description" field in the computer inventory could be used for what you are wanting.

That field is pulled from each computer's description under "Start, Right click Computer, Choose Properties"

  • This is what we use, we even created kscripts to set this description field to what we want. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
  • But don't I have to go to each machine and change it? Right now I have them named a certain name for what they are doing. Not sure about a Kscript - rwentz 11 years ago
  • Are the different areas you're wanting to put in descriptions for named similarly? If so you could use smart labels to seperate out the different departments/locations then have scripts setup to run on those particular smart labels.

How many different locations are we talking about? - AFCUjstrick 11 years ago
  • We just moved into a new plant and we are looking at the plant floor on a map. I am putting the map coordinates to each machine. O have it laid out in an Adobe file to see what computer/printer we might have to go to. We have maybe 25 departments in the plant. Maybe 4 areas on the map for each department. So if I have 15 computers in shipping, I put the coordinates down to the areas where the computers/printers are.

Just thought there might be an easier way then going to each machine.

I really need to learn scripting and how it works with KACE.

  • Scripting this out is very easy.
I'd start with the smart labels though. Try and get them divided up that way first. That will make the scripting part of things much easier for the future.
Are you familiar with smart labels? - AFCUjstrick 11 years ago
  • just a little. We just bought the KACE in May. I do have the guide on how to create smart labels
Do you think I should make smart labels for each department first?
Then I can drill down the coordinate later? - rwentz 11 years ago
  • Absolutely. Find some differentiating factor for each department computers then let the smart label do it's thing. The support guys are very helpful as well as the folks on IT Ninja. I would have thought you'd have a jump start package that came with a new purchase to get you all up to speed on the kbox. - AFCUjstrick 11 years ago
