Issues with imaging Windows 10

Hello, we are trying to get an image ready for Windows 10 and are running into some issues. When I used to create Windows 7 images I could build an image without sys prepping it and be able to deploy it on the same type of machine to test if it was working or not. I have tried to do that with Windows 10 but every time I deploy it, after restarting the machine, it acts like there is no OS installed. I have three pre-installation tasks:

Create Single Partition
Format drive as C
Add MBR for Windows 10/8/7/etc

I do not have any post-installation tasks right now since I just want to get a use image.

I have tried to use the scripted image for Windows 10 but I am not able to get that running because it cannot find the source file.

Any help or tips would be appreciated. I have already tried following this guide, http://www.itninja.com/blog/view/windows-10-imaging-guide, but it is outdated and it seems like I am following the same steps. Please let me know if I can provide more information.

  • The article you mention on ITNinja is when the Windows 10 was not quite supported by the appliance as was a work around. It is now supported with the latest version. - TheAustinDave 7 years ago

I would run a scripted install first, as the ISO file should be downloaded from Microsoft and then mounted. Once mounted it can be uploaded using the Media Manager. Create a scripted install with the two needed items (partition/format) for the target system.

The deployment will prepare the drive, then the ISO file will run to install windows 10 as a legacy image (meaning it has NTFS formatted partition).

Sysprep is needed for any image being deployed, and also of note is Windows 10 upgrades on its own and may give errors if you show as an upgraded OS (moving from 1511>1607>1703 are considered upgrades my Microsoft).

Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 can all be created on single partitions as it depends on how it is installed with the ISO file.

Preparing the hard drive with only a single C: drive, NTFS formatted will be only one partition (system may create the second partition on its own while running the ISO).

If you create two partitions, then it will install as Legacy (both NTFS formatted) or as UEFI (NTFS/FAT32 mixed partition). The UEFI must be a two partition as it has mixed formats.

From my experience with Windows 10, it creates 2 partitions. The smaller partition, I believe, is the system partition where it does it's refresh of the OS. Are you only getting one partition when trying to upload the master image to KACE? I've always seen 2, and I've uploaded multiple images from scratch (not uploading the same master image).
