Latitude 10 Tablet - Imaging with KACE?
Anyone have any idea how I would image Latitude 10's? We bought some with basic Windows 8 on them, since we have Volume Licensing through Microsoft. We will want to put Windows 8 PRO on them, and test image. From what I've read, K2000 won't image Windows 8 or make Windows 8 KBE's until 3.5 (any ETA?)....but the tablets do NOT have an ethernet port. I'm assuming I could get a USB to ethernet adapter, but I'm not sure if they will be detected to boot from (specific model/brand known to boot into KACE and be supported?)

We back imaged to windows 7 for now. I created a kace boot usb drive with my wim image from the kbox

I manually ran diskpart, format, imagex and bcdedit - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago

We also got a dock with our lat 10 seeds, you can add the drivers for that to your pe env and boot thru it. It just limits to one tablet imaging at a time - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago

The selling point for us on the tablets is to have our K-12 schools test Windows 8 out, so going back to Windows 7 is pointless for what we're trying to achieve. Is there a tutorial on how to make a boot USB with WIM image? Does that completely eliminate the need for the KBOX for that image then?
Also, any idea if it's possible to use a USB-->Ethernet adapter to PXE boot into KACE? Or is something like that not really supported? I imagined I would end up doing these 1 by 1, which is fine. - sfigg 11 years ago-
I have used an usb3 ethernet adapter on a lenovo ultrabook to image. I just had to place the drivers into the boot env and it worked just fine. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago

I have already created a windows 8 usb boot on a 500 gig drive. download the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit and create a boot usb with that and place the imagex on the drive also. You can then sysprep one tablet and boot to that usb drive, capture the wim image and then deploy from that drive manually. This does not need the kbox to image this way but it is all manual, so you will know about native MS imaging. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago

Thanks - can you share what adapter you used? Also, any special folder that I need to dump the drivers to? - sfigg 11 years ago

For windows 8 you will need to use dism to add them to the wim image.

For windows 7 and the kbox if you want to add drivers you can place them in a subfolder under the os bit name, for example I created a subdir called tmcc to keep all my drivers in
\\ikbox\drivers\kbe_windows_x64\tmcc - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago-
Thanks. Looks a bit confusing, but it's all new to me, so I'll have to take it one step at a time once I get the tablets in! Thanks for the info! - sfigg 11 years ago

we have these docks, also found out it will work on any manufacturers system with a usb3 port , just need the usb3 drivers and the nic on the dock drivers.

You can get started on a win 8 boot env now. download and install on a win 7 or 8 machine

and read up on imagex and test capture and deploy a non-sysprep'd image to same box for practice

if you get stuck post a new question or email me - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
The last I heard about 3.5 is that it's supposed to be out Q1 2013, so we should see it pretty soon. In fact, if you want I'm sure if you contacted KACE support they could get you set up with a beta version, as at KACEkon they were willing to take volunteers.

Yeah, I was told about the beta at KACEkon, but they advise not to use Beta in a live environment, so I'd rather not until it's finalized. I'm more curious about the usb/ethernet solution on how to pxe boot and image from the K2. - sfigg 11 years ago
I haven't seen an ETA for release of 3.5. The beta is either closed or will soon and it's moving to a RC, so if interested submit a ticket to support.
Check here for PXE/BIOS issues on Dell systems: http://www.itninja.com/blog/view/bios-pxe-boot-issues
According to that, it will only PXE boot from the dock and with BIOS A03.

Thanks - very helpful! - sfigg 11 years ago
Why not try imaging with MDT 2012?
