Linking Apppliances
Hello,
Were in the process of building a second appliance for testing and I have noticed we can link the appliances. I am wondering how this would work?
Would / Could the linked appliance download the patches which are required and push them to the linked appliance so only one of the appliances is doing the download?
What is the advantage of linking the appliances?
Thanks
James

The main feature of linking is being able to switch to the other appliance and being logged in if the credentials are the same.
You can also import MI to a SDA and do reporting on multiple appliances due to the linking feature.
They don't share the same databases or data etc.

Hello,
Thank you for the quick response.
So if I link the appliances together it will need to connect to the internet and download its own set of patches? I was hoping to have a central box do the download and distribution. I presume this is not possible?

There is the Online and Offline patching feature.
You can define one appliance as ONLINE, which can download patches and one as OFFLINE, where you put the patch bundle up (this can be completely off the internet)

You might want to also check with your QUEST rep to see what is allowed with your user license. While having a virtual SMA license entitles you to 3 instances of the appliance, you are only supposed to have one live appliance. The others are for dev and DR, the only exception to that might be if you use an external SMA to download patches and then configure your internal SMA (without internet access) to run the patching inside your environment.
