What is a PERC 6i controller?

We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 with a PERC 6i controller. What is the controller's use and its purpose?

What is the ROMB battery for the PERC 6i controller? Is it needed? It seems like it is missing from the server?

It's the RAID controller card.  There are a couple of different varieties. The battery protects cached data on the controller in the event of a power loss.
